Chihuly Jerusalem 2000
Published in Hardcover by Portland Pr (June, 2000)
Author: Dale Chihuly
Average review score:

A clash of the ages
The mystical beauty of Dale Chihuly's glass sculptures unfolds in breathtaking arrays of color and light amid the ancient ramparts of Jerusalem's Tower of David. The 2,000-year-old citadel, one of the few legacies of a legendary age, is as compelling to the eye as are the modern artworks for which it serves as a contrasting backdrop.

Having been fortunate enough to attend this exhibition in the flesh, I can verify that any photographic reproduction of Chihuly's work cannot dream of attaining an equal effect to the translucent apparitions they depict in but two of their three dimensions. Nevertheless, the photos, often shot from dazzling angles which the eyes of visitors like myself could not have conjured, do as much justice to the sculptures as their technology makes possible.

Apart from photographs galore, the book contains Chihuly's preliminary sketches. These offer a dynamic perspective of the work in progress, and are indispensable for any serious enthusiast. Detailed annotations by the master himself complement the collection and make this book into more than just a coffee-table read.

Children of Hiroshima
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (September, 1982)
Author: Arata Osada
Average review score:

nuclear devastation as seen by children who experienced it
This book has long been out of print. Most recently (1982) it was published as a paperback, but its original oversize hardback format was superior because it contained illustrations rendered by amateurs who were there, as well as text. The editor, Dr. Arata Osada, collected school essays written in 1950 by children of Hiroshima. He organized them by age from primary school (5th grade) through college. Thus the children were between 5 and about 15 in 1945. Many of these accounts are touching and emotional in their stark simplicity. Too often we think objectively of war. This volume provides a subjective view of young people caught up in a cataclysmic event and its aftermath. It is a testament to humanity. Such a book written by children of Rwanda, or Cambodia, or Bosnia might equal this book, but I fear they too would soon be out of print. No one wants to read the plain truth without justifications, explanations, analyses, plans of action, etc. Just what was.

Christian Communities in the Arab Middle East: The Challenge of the Future
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (January, 1999)
Author: Andrea Pacini
Average review score:

Excellent resource on a neglected community
For anyone who studies religion in the Middle East, this book is absolutely indispensible. Bringing together a wide range of authors, this makes a wealth of information accessible in one volume (from history to cultural heritage/contributions to demography to recent emigration, etc). Though it is a bit pricey, it is worth the investment for anyone who is interested in this topic.

Brilliant political novel
The story of the Berlin wall: documented and researched thoroughly, detailing the struggle of the SED to preserve socialism. The book reads like a thriller and gives first-hand insights into the wheelers and schemers of the eastern german political scene. At the same time you can go through the emotional events of the wall coming down again. Why hasn't anybody translated this book in english yet?

City Smart: Indianapolis
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (12 August, 1999)
Authors: Helen Wernle O'Guinn, Betsy Sheldon, and Helen Wernie O'Guinn
Average review score:

Easy reading and well organized.
Betsy and I enjoyed creating this book because it gave us an opportunity to introduce visitors and residents to places that make Indianapolis special. Strolling, shopping, or sightseeing, visitors will be guided to those places that gave them the richest flavors the city has to offer.

The book is divided into thirteen chapters, including Where To Stay, Shopping, and Nightlife, making it easy for readers to pinpoint the topic they are searching for. Entries are short and fact-packed, and the book includes plenty of pictures and fun facts about the city.

We are particularly pleased that a portion of the books profits go to the Indianapolis Parks Foundation. Helen O'Guinn

City Smart: Nashville
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (May, 1999)
Author: Susan Williams Knowles

Help for relocation or traveling!
I purchased this book before moving to Nashville and it was a tremendous help. The City Smart series breaks down a town into sections or even communities and then tells the reader what is available in that immediate area in a number of categories: entertainment, food, lodging, tourist attractions and more. All the places with in the book have been rated according to the author's personal criteria but when she said Brown's Diner has the best burger in Nashville, she wasn't kidding. Her rating scale is fair and very accurate. Easy to read maps are included in each section, with a larger one at the back which makes learning and navigating a new town a cinch! I found this book to be an invaluable resource for my relocation to Nashville. I tend to have lots of friends and family visit and it's been a fabulous tool for that. I've purchased other books in the City Smart series as well and was quite pleased with them, also. Even though I lived in Kansas City for 30 years, I found things in the City Smart Kansas City book I was completely unaware of. I am certain the City Smart Nashville book has increased my pleasure of living in Nashville. If you are visiting Nashville, looking into one of Nashville's fine colleges or moving here, you NEED this book!

Citypack Chicago (Citypack)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (April, 1997)
Authors: Fodors and Geodata
Average review score:

Concise, accurate, useful
I grew up in Chicago but haven't been back for 20 years. So, when I was assigned to Chicago to open a new business, I bought a few guides, this was one of them. While not intended to be an absolutely complete guidebook (ala the Fodors gold series) it does a good job of listing the top restaurants (by cuisine), top hotels (by price) top entertainment spots (by type) and top 25 sights to see. I especially liked the brevity of this feature because it helped me focus on the most important museums , entertainment and other features of the city. Every listing has a location, nearest mass transit stop, and map coordinates that match the city map that is included with the package. If you're looking for a simple but very useful guide, this is the one.
